Orthodontic treatment is more like a marathon than a sprint. There isn't a lot of immediate gratification to be had. Dramatic changes do occur, but they are over the course of weeks and months. We live in a fast-paced world, however, and there is increasing demand for "accelerated orthodontics" in an attempt to accomplish more in less time with braces or Invisalign.
Surgical procedures such as altering the bone in the jaws by an oral surgeon or perforating bone by an orthodontist with mini-screws can alter bone metabolism and cause teeth to move faster. There is a less-invasive option, however, called AcceleDent. With AcceleDent, patients wear a device resembling a sports mouthguard for 20 minutes a day while it gently vibrates the teeth. These vibrations have the potential to increase blood flow to the teeth and promote tooth movement. In addition, patients report less post-adjustment soreness when this device is used. We're happy to offer this technology to our patients interested in completing their orthodontic treatment as quickly as possible without compromising the quality of the end result. This can be helpful when weddings, senior pictures, etc, provide a deadline for when braces or Invisalign aligners need to be completed.
